Discriminatory Abuse
What is Discriminatory Abuse?
Discriminatory abuse occurs when an individual is treated unfairly or harmed because of their protected characteristics. These characteristics include age, gender, marital status, pregnancy, disability, race, nationality, ethnicity, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation and care leavers (in Manchester).
This type of abuse can take many forms, including harassment, physical violence, neglect, and financial exploitation. A full definition of abuse is outlined in the Care Act 2014.
Discriminatory abuse is often complex, involving issues of intersectionality and cultural sensitivity. For example, in a Safeguarding Adult Review concerning Olia and Baby W, it was identified that the mother experienced discrimination related to her race. One of the key recommendations was to promote cultural competence. As a result, the partnership now offers training on cultural competency, titled Conscious Inclusion.
